Nick Warren - Interviews & Articles

Interview: Nick WarrenBy Eva Holtkamp01/11/2000Interview: Nick Warren
On the 21st of July 2000, Nick Warren visited Amsterdam at the Earth party in the Milkyway. None of the visitors knew that the set of Nick was chosen as theme for his forth Global Underground release. Eva asked Nick about his latest compilation mix and more...

The setting of the new GU album was supposed to be Tel Aviv, like the first GU Album (Tony de Vit). Why finally Amsterdam for your 4th GU-album?

"Actually Berlin was the first choice, which I was not that happy about, because I had never had a blinding gig there, in Amsterdam I have good friends and I loved the last time I played at Earth, so I asked for it to be changed."

Do you think, without the knowledge that this CD represents your set at Earth in Amsterdam, you can hear this is a compilation from Amsterdam?

The set includes a number of tracks played at the Earth set."

On the album, we can hear tracks you played at Earth the 21st of July. Did you choose those tracks based on the audience's response that specific night?

To be truthful I have a clear idea of key tracks (maybe four or five). The rest depends on the feel of the mix while I do it live at home.

Are there any tracks you wanted to put on the CD, but after your night at Earth decided to eliminate?

Again tracks like the modwheel track were lined up right up until I did the mix.

Do you think your first time at Earth earlier this year, was necessary to do the set in July for the GU CD?

I would never feel happy doing a GU album night at a club I had never been to before

Which of your four GU CD's are you most satisfied with and why?

"I loved Brazil and I like this one."

The Progressive sound is breaking through in Holland. In England the sound is popular for a much longer time. Do you see a resemblance with the audience in Holland and in England at the beginning?

Holland has always had a number of key producers and at the moment it is the same as in England. Sander (Kleinenberg), Revolt, Remy , Stef, Junkie XL and many more. The audience will always notice people with talent.

Do you think, the sound/scene in Holland becomes as big as in England?

Hopefully not as commercial.

You play all around the world, have your own studio to produce/re-mix and you mix CD's. Is there any time left to do other things beside music?

I love spending time with my family and occasionally go fly fishing.

Do you think there will come a time, you will choose for just producing or just Djing?

I never look to far ahead because you never know what tomorrow will bring.

Besides two times Earth, can we expect to see you more often in Holland?
Next March again at Earth.

Which country do you prefer to play and why?

My favourites are USA, Israel and Australia, because it is a younger and more vibrant scene.

The 17th November, Rock in Bristol will open the doors. You were asked to be the musical director. What can we expect of Rock in Bristol?

Rock looks fantastic, will have the biggest sound system in the UK and Fridays will be great.
