Paris
Nick, a music obsessive who grew up on punk, reggae and pop was, like so many DJs turned onto the power of house music in the late 80s. Living in Bristol, he'd been playing tunes for a few years before, running his own club night, Wiggle, in the city with a friend and he took immediately to this new sound coming from America. In 1990, a new house club, Vision took the city by storm and in a perfect bit of timing, he was offered the chance to play in the upstairs room, spinning weird downbeat Balearic records and mixing house with music by The Clash and Frank Sinatra. Catching the attention of a group of guys who had their own band, he was roped in to tour with them as their DJ when they went to play America. The group was Massive Attack.
After touring with Massive he joined up with another Bristol producer, Jody Wisternoff in 1994 to form Way Out West, they recorded the seminal 'Ajare' single together, a huge progressive house club hit. Three years later, and with the duo now signed to Deconstruction, it was re-released, this time breaking into the charts and finally, the nation's consciousness. Then came 'The Gift'. With a memorable hook line culled from an old hardcore track, blended with a mix of ambient soundscapes and breaks won it universal plaudits. The success of 'The Gift' propelled way Out West onto Top Of The Pops and catapulted Nick into the league of the superstar DJ and producer. Their third album was released in 2004.
Nick Warren's seventh Global Underground album, this time from Paris, released Feb 2007 he has moved into a permanent A&R position at Hope Recordings where his ability to source the world for great new producers is leading to some fantastic signings.. Nick Warren chooses Paris for Global Underground #30
Progressive house ambassador Nick Warren unwraps his seventh Global Underground volume with a mix inspired by an October date at Mix Club in Paris. GU 30: Paris will be released in February.
Warren's latest effort for the long-running series again finds him taking prog to territories where it's very much on the fringe of the club scene. "Paris is just a stylish city. It's beautiful. I've always gone for the cities that aren't really known as clubland capitals, says Warren. Paris is the same really. It gives it a bit more of an edge and it means I really have to work at it."
Warren is one of prog's biggest and longest-serving supporters. In the mid-nineties, he was one of the first to produce progressive breaks as a member of Way Out West, while as a DJ he's championed the prog/prog trance sound on no fewer than six previous GU volumes. More recently he's been heading up A&R at Hope Recordings and hes also been in the studio with comeback king Jimmy Van M.
'GU 30: Paris' is a 2CD affair, with the first volume containing dreamy downtempo fare in the vein of Warren fave Ulrich Schnauss, who again pops up with a remix of Justin Robertson's 'Revtone'. Warren's Amsterdam GU introduced then unknown producer James Holden to the world, and this time its newcomers Audioglider and Tripswitch in the spotlight. Disc two is the clubbier of the two volumes: on paper it looks like classic Warren with tracks from Pole Folder, Habersham and Kazell, 16 Bit Lolitas and Tannen (aka Stel).
